Etymology

ローマ (“Rome, Roman”) +‎ 字 (“character”).

Note that it is not ×ローマン字 (rōmanji) – ローマ is from Portuguese, not English; this is an easy mistake for English speakers to make. Compare however ローマン体, which does use ‘n’, because that word is borrowed from English.
