Etymology
From Arabic فَزِعَ (faziʿa, “to fear”, now chiefly “to be terrified, to panic”) with b- from a development [fz] > [vz] > [bz] in some of the inflected forms (as also in qabeż). The verb is an archaism in Maltese as most other Arabic dialects only continue خافَ (ḵāfa), which Maltese in turn lacks.
