According to the theory that the Japanese share a partial descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel, the phrase ultimately originates from Hebrew הֲדֹ֖ךְ הַשֵּׁם (“hadok hashem”, literally “tread on the name (Hashem)”); compare Job 40:12.
