Etymology
Compound of 簀 (su, “mat or screen made of reed or bamboo”) + 垂れ (tare, “hanging down”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 垂れる (tareru, “to hang down”)).[1][2][3][4][5] The tare changes to dare as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First attested in the Man'yōshū of 759.[1]
