From 溺(おぼ)れ (obore, “drowning, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 溺(おぼ)れる (oboreru, “to drown”).”) + 死(し)に (shini, “dying, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 死(し)ぬ (shinu, “to die”).”). The shini changes to jini as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
