Etymology

Shape from Phoenician 𐤅‬‎ (w‬), whence also digamma ϝ (w). Name is Greek: ὖ ψιλόν means "plain υ," in order to distinguish it from οι, which had become identical in pronunciation. Displaced earlier ὖ (û).
