Beekes reconstructs Proto-Indo-European *tḱiH-in (“kite”), connecting the word with Armenian ցին (cʿin, “kite”), Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (saena-, “a mythical bird”), and Sanskrit श्येन (śyena, “eagle, falcon”).
