ἄντλος
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἄντλον (ántlon)
Etymology
Connection with Latin sentīna (“bilgewater”) is impossible in Indo-European terms, as *sm- would give ἁ- and not ἁν-. Quite convincing is the proposal by Benveniste to compare Hittite [script needed] (ḫan-, “to draw water”), although it requires an unusual suffix -τλος.
