From Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʰ- (“to be upset, afraid”); compare ἄχνυμαι (ákhnumai). Cognate with Old Irish ad·ágathar (“to fear”) and Gothic 𐍉𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ōgjan, “to scare”).
