Ẹsinmirin
Yoruba
Alternative forms
- Ẹ̀sìmìrìn
Etymology
Possibly from ẹ̀sìn + mìrìn. Likely related to Igbo òsìmìlì (“river”) and Igbo Òsìmìlì (“Niger river”). While the term mìrìn is not in the modern Yoruba vocabulary, it is potentially an older cognate with Igbo mmiri (“water”) and thus potentially a Doublet of omi. It possibly existed as a term for ancient bodies of water encountered by proto-Yoruboid peoples.
