Usage notes
In the Mongolian script, derivational affixes are similar to those in English, in that they attach directly to the stem. On the other hand, inflectional affixes are orthographically detached from the stem (represented in Unicode by the narrow no-break space character U+202F). The nirugu is therefore used in grammar and linguistic texts to denote the difference when displaying affixes in isolation. For example:
- ᠊ᠳᠤᠭᠠᠷ (-duɣar) (derivational; with nirugu; denotes an ordinal number)
- ᠬᠣᠶᠠᠳᠤᠭᠠᠷ ― qoyaduɣar ― second
- ᠠᠴᠠ (ača) (inflectional; without nirugu; denotes the ablative case)
- ᠬᠣᠲᠠ ᠠᠴᠠ ― qota-ača ― from the city
