Etymology
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *luŋh ~ *luuŋ(h) ~ *ləŋh (“to hollow, excavate, bore”). Compare Vietnamese trũng (“concave”).
Putative cognates are found in Sino-Tibetan languages, mainly in Burmese လှိုင်း (hluing:, “uneven surface”) and Mizo lawng (“to take out the heart of a wild plantain tree”).
