Etymology
From Proto-Georgian-Zan *na-qšir- (“coal”), a past-participle lexeme formed by prefixing the verb stem *šwer-, *šwr- (“to put out, extinguish”), whence also შრობა (šroba), გაშრობა (gašroba).[1]
Fähnrich reconstructs Proto-Georgian-Zan *naqš-, thus considering the initial *ნა (*na) to be part of the root. He derives Mingrelian and Laz cognates from the later Proto-Georgian-Zan *noxšk- archetype and notes the development of ვ (v) in Mingrelian ნოშქვერი (noškveri).[2][3]
On the other hand, Dzidziguri derives from earlier *ნაშხირი (*našxiri), developed through the reduction of first ი (i) in *ნაშიხირი (*našixiri), which in turn was formed by affixation of the Svan root *შიხ- (*šix-, “combustion”).[4] This is discarded by Klimov.
