From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sjej-s (“to know”). Compare with Tibetan ཤེས་པ (shes pa, “to understand; to know”), Chinese 悉 (“to know”), Mizo thei (“can; to be able”), Chepang चीःसा (ciʔ‑, “to know; to understand”).
