From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bed-, *bod-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰh₂-, *bʰodʰh₂-. Cognate with Latvian best (“to dig, bury”), Old Prussian embaddusisi (“they stick”), Proto-Slavic *bosti (“to stab, sting”), and Latin fodio (“to dig”).
