Possibly a Hobson-Jobson of Cantonese 十八 (sap6 baat3, “eighteen”), Sino-Korean reading 십팔 (十八, sip'pal) (euphemistic spelling of Korean 씨발 (ssibal, “to fuck”), which might be the ultimate origin of the offensiveness of this Burmese word).
