Etymology

From แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ, “female prefix”) +‎ มด (mót, “person of occult knowledge; person who practices magic or sorcery”). Compare Khmer មេមត់ (mee mŭət, “witch; medium”); Lao ແມ່ມົດ (mǣ mot, “witch”).
