From Proto-Tai *keːᴮ (“old (of living beings)”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩵, Lao ແກ່ (kǣ), Shan ၵႄႇ (kàae), Tai Nüa ᥐᥥᥱ (kě), Zhuang geq, Saek เก.

Usage notes

• Often confused with กับ (gàp, “with”). For example, ให้แก่ (hâi-gɛ̀ɛ, “to give (something) to (someone)”) is often misused as ให้กับ (hâi-gàp, “to give (something) with (someone)”).
• Replaceable by ต่อ (dtɔ̀ɔ) and แด่ (dɛ̀ɛ). The latter, however, conveys a sense of great honour or respect and is often used to address gods, priests, royal persons, persons in authority, etc.
