Etymology

From Pali tiracchāna (“animal”, literally “going horizontally; not erect”). Cognate with Old Khmer tirichāna (“animal”), Modern Khmer តិរច្ឆាន (tecchaan), Burmese တိရစ္ဆာန် (ti.rachcan). Compare Sanskrit तिरश्चीन (tiraścīna, “horizontal; traverse”), तिर्यञ्च् (tiryañc, “animal”).
