From Khmer សំនៀង (sɑmniəng, “sound; voice; pronunciation”), which is an -m- infixed form of សៀង (siəng, “sound; voice”), in turn from Thai เสียง (sǐiang). Cognate with Lao ສຳນຽງ (sam nīang).
