From Old Khmer snoṅa, snaṅa, snaṅ, snoṅ (“exchange; reimbursement; repayment; replacement; representation; substitution; etc”); extended forms of saṅa, soṅ, saṅ (“to give back; to pay back; to replace; to return; to substitute; etc”).
Further extended as saṃnoṅ, saṃnaṅ (“compensation; reimbursement; repayment; etc”), from which Thai สำนอง was derived.
Compare Modern Khmer ស្នង (snɑɑng), សង (sɑɑng), សំណង (sâmnâng).
