วัว (wuua, “cow”) +‎ สันหลัง (sǎn-lǎng, “back; spinal column; spine”) +‎ หวะ (wà, “deeply wounded”); literally "a cow with a deep wound on its back" or "a cow whose back is deeply wounded"; probably from or influenced by the following old stanza:
