From Pali vivāda (“dispute; controversy; contention; contest; etc”); ultimately from Sanskrit विवाद (vivāda, idem); possibly via Old Khmer bibāda, bibādda, bibāta, bibātta, bibādha, bibvāda, bvibāta, bīybādhi, bœbāta (“to dispute; to contest; etc”). Cognate with Thai วิวาท (wí-wâat), Modern Khmer វិវាទ (viviət).
