From Old Khmer pos, pvās, or Angkorian Old Khmer pvas, pvās (“to be initiated into holy orders; to enter holy orders; to be in holy orders”); extended as paṃnos, paṃnvās, pnos, from which Thai ผนวช (pà-nùuat) was derived.
