From Sanskrit जम्बु (jambu, “rose apple”). Compare Old Khmer jamvū (“rose apple”); Modern Khmer ជម្ពូ (cumpuu, “rose apple”). Cognate with Thai ชมพู (chom-puu, “the plant, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels., of the family Myrtaceae”).
