Etymology
Borrowed from Arabic حَلَال (ḥalāl), from the root ح ل ل (ḥ-l-l). Cognate with Classical Syriac ܚܠܠ (ḥallel, “to cleanse, to purify”). Doublet of মহল (môhôlô) and মহল্লা (môhôlla).
