Inherited from Early Assamese মাছ (macho), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha), from Sanskrit মৎস্য (mátsya), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mátsyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Cognate with Sylheti ꠝꠣꠍ (masó), Bengali মাছ (machô), Oriya ମାଛ (machô), Hindi मच्छ (macch), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (maccha), Sindhi مَڇُ / मछु (machu), Marathi मासा (māsā).
Doublet of মৎস্য (moitso, moisso).
