Bengali
Etymology
Inherited from Sanskrit बुक्क (bukka, “he-goat”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bukkas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰućkas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuǵ-k-os, from *bʰuǵ- (whence also English buck). The semantic shift to mean a foolish person is common for names of other farm animals as well due to the common perception of their behaviours (compare ছাগল (chagol, “goat”), গাধা (gadha, “donkey”), গর্দভ (gôrdobh, “donkey”) and বলদ (bôlod, “ox”)).
