Etymology
From Middle Bengali বাঙ্গালা (bāṅgālā, “Bengal”), ultimately derived from Sanskrit বঙ্গ (vaṅga) + Bengali আল (al, “mound”) + the adjectival suffix ী (-i). Compare Arabic بَنْغَالِيّ (banḡāliyy), Persian بنگالی (bangālī), Hindi बंगाली (baṅgālī).
