From Early Assamese *বাইঙ্গনা (*baiṅgona), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀸𑀇𑀁𑀕𑀡 (*vāiṃgaṇa), from Ashokan Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit ৱাতিঙ্গণ (vātiṅgaṇa), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *wātinganas. Cognate with ancestral Bengali বাগন (bagôn) (modern Bengali বেগুন (begun)).
