Etymology
There are two possible explanations for the etymology of this name:
- From the title of the last Jain tirthankara (Mahavira), Vardhamāna, which comes from the Sanskritic root वृध् (vṛdh, “to grow, thrive”).
- From Persian [script needed] (badh-e-dewan, “district capital”).
