Etymology
Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (*vahiyā, “accounts”), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā, “diary, ledger”), a variant of वाहिका (vāhikā) (compounded in राजवाहिका (rājavāhikā, literally “the bearer of (the records of) the king”)), the feminine form of वाहक (vāhaka, “bearer, carrier”), a compound of वाह (vāha, “carrying”, from the root वह् (vah, “to carry”)) + -क (-ka, agent suffix). Cognate to Assamese বহী (bohi), Oriya ବହି (bôhi), ବଇ (bôi), Gujarati વહી (vahī), Hindi बही (bahī), Punjabi ਵਹੀ (vahī), ਬਹੀ (bahī), Sindhi وَهِي / वही, Marathi वही (vahī).
