Learned borrowing from Sanskrit पथ (patha), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *patʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *patʰás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pent- (“path”); cognate with English find and path. Doublet of পন্থা (pôntha, “path, way, manner”).
