Etymology
Syncopal and umlauted form of earlier দইয়াল (dôiyal), itself H-dropped from earlier দহিয়াল (dôhiyal, literally “covered in yogurt, one who sells yogurt”), from Sanskrit दधिपाल (dadhipāla), a compound of दधि (dadhi) + पाल (pāla). Compare Assamese দহিকতৰা (dohiktora). Doublet of দইওয়ালা (dôiwala).
