Inherited from Early Assamese ঝিউ (jhiu), from Magadhi Prakrit [Term?] (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀻𑀆 (dhīā)), from Sanskrit দুহিতৃ (duhitṛ). Cognate with Sylheti ꠎꠤ (zi), Oriya ଝିଅ (jhiô), Hindi धी (dhī), धिया (dhiyā).
