Etymology
According to some, the word is a corruption of Sanskrit তণ্ডুল (taṇḍula) via তাঁড়ুল (tãṛul) > তাঁউল (tãul) > চাঁউল (cãul); further contracted forms, according to this hypothesis, include চাল (cal).[1] Another explanation is that it is corruption of চালনী (calnī, “sieve”), from Sanskrit चालनी (cālanī) (< चल् (√cal, “move”)).[2]
For another probable derivation, see Etymology 1 of Bengali চাল (cal).
