Inherited from Prakrit कप्पड (kappaḍa), from Sanskrit कर्पट (karpaṭa, “old garment; rag”), ultimately from Munda. Cognate with Marathi कापड (kāpaḍ); partially cognate with Hindi कपड़ा (kapṛā), Marathi कपडा (kapḍā).
