-ওয়ালা
Bengali
Alternative forms
- -াল (-al)
- -আলা (-ala) (Native Spelling) (rare in writing)
Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit পাল (pāla) as -আল, and then developing the extension া (a) to form -আলা (-ala). According to Chatterji and Sukumar Sen this was influenced in spelling by the cognate in Hindustani -वाला (-vālā)/والا during the 19th century, rendering the modern spelling.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /wa.la/
- (often) IPA(key): /a.la/
Suffix
-ওয়ালা • (-oyala)
- (of a human)-er (agentive marker); possessor; owner; dealer; seller; practitioner
- বাড়িওয়ালাকে মাসের শেষে ভাড়া দিতে হবে
- baṛioyalake maser śeṣe bhaṛa dite hôbe
- rent must be paid to the house-owner at the end of the month
Usage notes
Though the spelling suggests the suffix be pronounced /wa.la/, it is seldom pronounced that way because the word is a native Bengali word and is pronounced /a.la/ in the native manner. The spelling, as mentioned before, comes from Hindustani and does not hold sway in the pronunciation.
