Inherited from Sanskrit इलीश (ilīśa), इल्लिश (illiśa). Cognate with Bengali ইলিশ (iliś), Oriya ଇଲିସ (ilisô), Hindustani ہلسہ‎, ہلسا‎ / हिल्सा (hilsā).
