Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *swep- (“to sleep”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) whence English hypno-; Proto-Italic *swepnos giving Latin somnus; Lithuanian sãpnas (“dream”), Proto-Slavic *sъpati (“sleep”); Old English swefan whence English sweven (“to sleep”).
