Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sperǵʰ- (“to move energetically, hurry, spring”). Cognate with Ancient Greek σπέρχω (spérkhō, “to set in rapid motion, haste, hurry”), English spring.
Other possible cognates include Lithuanian spreñgti (“to push”), Proto-Slavic *pręsti (“to spin”).
