Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘭𑘰𑘽𑘟𑘜𑘹 (sāṁdaṇe), 𑘭𑘰𑘽𑘠𑘜𑘹 (sāṁdhaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀁𑀥𑀇 (saṃdhaï), 𑀲𑀁𑀥𑁂𑀇 (saṃdhei), from Sanskrit सन्दधाति (sandadhāti). Compare Gujarati સાંધવું (sā̃dhvũ), Hindustani سَانْنَا / सानना (sānnā), Sindhi سَنڌَڻُ / संधणु, Oriya ସାନ୍ଧିବା (sandhiba), ସାନିବା (saniba), Sinhalese අනනවා (ananawā).
