Inherited from Sanskrit शिखण्डिका (śikhaṇḍikā) (compare Prakrit 𑀙𑁂𑀁𑀟𑀸 (cheṃḍā), Old Marathi 𑘫𑘹𑘽𑘚𑘰 (śeṃḍā), 𑘭𑘹𑘽𑘚𑘰 (seṃḍā)). Cognate with Konkani शेंडी (śeṇḍī) / ಶೆಂಡಿ / xenddi.
