Borrowed from Persian شاه (šâh), from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭫𐭪𐭠 (šāh) from Old Persian 𐏋 (xšāyaθiya, “king”). Compare Gujarati શાહ (śāh), Hindustani शाह (śāh) / شَاہ (śāh), Punjabi ਸ਼ਾਹ (śāh) / شاہ (śāh), Nepali शाह (śāha), Bengali শাহ (śahô).
