From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śánsas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉánsas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéns-o-s, from *ḱens- (“to announce, proclaim”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬇𐬧𐬖𐬀 (sə̄ṇγa, “pronouncement”), Latin cēnseō.
