Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *weyk- (“to separate, choose, set aside”), an extension of *wey- (“to separate”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *wīhaz (“sacred, holy”), Old Norse vé (“temple, sanctuary”), Latin victima, English witch.
