Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *weǵ- (“fresh, strong”). Cognate with Latin vegeō (“excite, arouse; be lively”) whence English vegetation; Latin vigeō (“thrive, be alive”) whence vigil, vigor; English wake, watch.
