Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (“light”) in the sense of "illuminating" via the eyes (cf. related word रुच् (ruc) "to shine, illuminate"). Cognate with Latin lūx, Russian луч (luč, “light”), Persian روشن (rowšan), Old English lēoht (whence English light).
