Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥gás (“forest animal”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀 (mərəγa, “bird”), Sogdian 𐼺𐽀𐼲𐼷 (mrɣy, “bird”). Also related to Persian مرغ (murğ, “hen”).
