From Proto-Indo-European *meyth₂- (to exchange) an extension of *mey- (to exchange). Cognate with Latin mutō whence English mutate, mutual; Latin mittō (send) whence English emit, mission, etc.; Proto-Slavic *mьstь (revenge, vengeance); English mis-, miss.
